Chronic Fatigue
Chronic Fatigue can be caused by many underlying conditions including low thyroid or adrenal function, mineral deficiency (especially Magnesium), Vitamin B12 deficiency, viral infections, yeast overgrowth, depression, insomnia, stress and more.
Thyroid: Common symptoms include fatigue, brain fog or mental sluggishness, dry skin, dry hair, hair loss, constipation and low body temperature.
Adrenal: There are three hormones that the adrenal gland makes that can be deficient in those suffering from chronic fatigue: Cortisol—common symptoms include: fatigue, exercise intolerance, inability to sweat normally and low blood pressure. Aldosterone—symptoms may include: fatigue, low blood pressure and especially frequent lightheadedness when standing up. DHEA—the body converts this hormone into either testosterone or estrogen.
Mineral Deficiency: Magnesium is the most common mineral deficiency in those with fatigue. Other symptoms of magnesium deficiency include: muscle twitching/cramping (“charlie-horses”), new (not chronic) anxiety, insomnia and heart palpitations.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Symptoms may include fatigue, memory loss, numbness/tingling/burning in the extremities.
Viral Infections: True Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (as opposed to Chronic Fatigue) is a viral syndrome. Classic symptoms include: extreme, often disabling fatigue, intermittent sore throats and lymph gland swelling, brain fog, muscle and joint aching, night sweats and insomnia. Though significant fatigue is present in everyday life, additional stress caused by things like minimal exercise, shopping, socializing and emotional ups and downs, can cause an exacerbation of all of the above symptoms. There are no specific treatments for true viral CFS but some will make significant progress if other underlying conditions are identified and treated.
Depression: This is often a part of other illnesses and is difficult to sort out at times. Some can be depressed, and yet not even be aware of it. This is common if one has grown up in a family in which one or both primary caregivers struggled with depression, anxiety or drug dependence. However, if depression is not primarily a psychological problem, it may be caused by food allergies, insomnia, hormone imbalance, hypothyroidism, neurotransmitter imbalance, etc. We evaluate amino acids, hormone levels, and more. Most abnormalities found on these tests are treated with nutritional or natural hormone therapies. Medication is also used in selected situations.
Insomnia: Can be caused by stress, anxiety, depression, hypoglycemia, mineral deficiencies, hormonal changes, caffeine overuse and more. We evaluate and treat all of these conditions using state of the art tests and nutritionally based treatments.
