Natural Hormone Therapies

Almost all hormones are available in a natural form. Some people use them because they don’t tolerate the synthetic forms. Others do because it makes more sense to them.

Sex Hormones: We prescribe soy or wild yam derived natural hormones for menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome, osteopenia, osteoporosis, loss of libido and loss of sexual function when appropriate.

Thyroid Hormones: The common symptoms of hypothyroidism: fatigue, coldness, mental sluggishness, constipation, and dry skin and hair are treated with natural thyroid hormone and, when needed, free T3. Thyroid testing is comprehensive and includes a free T3 level. We find some people on T4 thyroid preparations or those not taking any thyroid hormone to have low free T3 levels.

Adrenal Hormones: Adrenal function is tested by blood, urine, or salivary tests. The salivary test gives us a chance to see how the cortisol levels fluctuate during a 24-hour time span. When levels are suboptimal, nutritional supplements can be used to support function. If this is unsuccessful, natural hydrocortisone in physiologic (not suppressive) doses can be prescribed. Because it is used at low doses, the side effects that can occur with high doses do not occur. Aldosterone is another adrenal hormone that helps the body retain salt and water. If it is not present at normal levels, low blood pressure, fatigue, and lightheadedness are common. DHEA deficiency is a third adrenal condition that can be tested and treated.
